On July 4, 2025, the federal government passed new legislation that makes significant changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), including an expanded SNAP work requirement. Illinois, along with all other states, must now implement these changes. Under the new policy, most SNAP recipients between ages 18 and 64 will be required to complete at least 80 hours per month of work, participation in an approved work program, volunteering, or a combination of these activities.
This session will explain the SNAP work requirement, its impact on SNAP participants, and the potential effects on the workforce system. The presentation will also highlight the strategies the State has developed to support SNAP participants.
This webinar will:
- Describe the fundamentals of the SNAP work requirement policy.
- Identify which individuals may be subject to the SNAP work requirement.
- Detail the reasons someone may be exempt from the requirement or the ways they can fulfill it.
- Outline how the Illinois workforce system is collaborating to support SNAP participants at both the state and local levels.
